Use of PEFC and FSC certified wood product

Panguaneta is certified and complies with European directives

The Oglio riverAfter the Conference on the Environment held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the international and regional basic programmes have included guide lines for the management of forests according to the principles of sustainable economy.  The official European authority in charge of the management and protection of forests is the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE). In mid-2005, forests actually certified in the world covered a surface of more than 246 million ha. 35% of these forests (approximately 87 million ha) are in Europe and these figures include the Panguaneta ones.

The use of certified wood products, supported by our business, concerns two important certifications:

  • The PEFC certification: it is the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), originally developed to meet the requirements of European owners of forests according to the principles of sustainable development.
  • The FSC certification: it takes its name from the Forest Stewardship Council and refers to the high environmental project implemented in cooperation with the WWF.

It is important to note that more than 90% of the wood used in Europe comes from European forests qualified as "universally stable”, well managed and in overproduction. In Panguaneta, this percentage is already 100%. Therefore, users may benefit from the highest reliance degree for what the Panguaneta products environmental credentials are concerned.

A commodity to protect

European forests have several functions: from the improvement to the conservation of the natural environment, from the safeguard of biodiversity to diversion, from the storage of carbon dioxide to the production of wood for industrial purposes. Thanks to these intrinsic characteristics, they contribute to enhance the landscape and improve the local economy. It is obvious that without a proper forest management there would not be any real increase in the absorption of carbon. The harvest of trees, when they reach their full maturity, allows to hold most of the carbon inside the wood products and stimulates new plantings. With the coming into force of the Kyoto Protocol in 2005, the forest industry will have “credits” thanks to a proper environmental management. This way, the importance of the forest industry in the global economic context will increase.

A proper management

A good management such as that carried out by Panguaneta, combined with a suitable legislation, is the only way to improve and keep the vitality of forests.  The organizations in charge of the management of European forests are oriented towards methods able to increase natural processes, with the aim of producing forest plantations suitable for the environment, socially useful and economically feasible. More than 1.6 million forests are forest reserves in the strict sense of the word, while in Northern and Western Europe there are large areas of protected forests. 66% of European forests are restored thanks to a process of natural regeneration; 30% of regeneration is carried out by reforestation or sowing and little more than 1% by felling. The European Community has developed also legislative and operational instruments (EC FLEGT) to validly oppose any attempt of unlawful deforestation or sale of timber.
