This result is the outcome of a two-step approach: first, reducing emissions through technological, plant engineering and management measures — including the stewardship of the company’s poplar plantations, which contribute to CO₂ absorption — and then the voluntary financing of certified climate projects to compensate for residual emissions.

Among the actions undertaken in this area, we highlight the support of the ClimatePartner project Renewable energy from Sumatra. This project is linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7, 8 and 13 and aims to avoid new carbon emissions from fossil fuels being released into the atmosphere by increasing the share of renewable electricity fed into the grid and improving security of supply in Northern Sumatra. The hydropower plant uses the flow of the Asahan River for energy generation and the natural Lake Toba as its water inflow, limiting the need for large dams. The electricity generated by the plant replaces energy that would otherwise have been produced from fossil fuels, with estimated savings of 1.021.070 tonnes of CO₂ per year. The project has also created around 30 long-term jobs, supporting the local development of new skills and professional expertise.

With regard to the protection of the natural environment and biodiversity, the collaboration launched in 2022 with Etifor — a spin-off of the University of Padua and a certified B Corp — continues as part of the WOWnature initiative. Panguaneta supports forest improvement and restoration activities along the Po and Oglio rivers, particularly within the projects named Boschi del Fiume Po and Canneto sull’Oglio. Panguaneta’s support contributes to strengthening ecological corridors and restoring native flora and fauna, helping to make local ecosystems resilient over the long term.

(*) Panguaneta is committed to a pathway aimed at reducing its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, assessed according to the GHG Protocol, and to providing a climate contribution equivalent to those emissions. The compensation of residual emissions in certain sectors through certified projects is a measure implemented alongside ongoing investments aimed at reducing emissions at source.
