Panguaneta and wood as an expression of the territory: a roundtable in Sabbioneta between tradition and innovation

On Saturday 6 December, at the Teatro all’Antica in Sabbioneta, Fondazione Sabbioneta Heritage marked the annual Fantastic Vespasiano celebration, honouring the birthday of Vespasiano Gonzaga, with a morning dedicated to the value of wood and to the region’s industrial and cultural excellence. During the panel “Living Material: Wood between tradition, innovation and contemporary art”, moderated by Camilla Sorregotti of Gazzetta di Mantova, Nicoletta Azzi, CEO of Panguaneta, offered an authoritative perspective on the strategic role of the poplar wood supply chain.

Nicoletta Azzi highlighted how Italian poplar—an entirely renewable and certified crop—represents a unique resource capable of combining environmental sustainability with local development. She recalled Panguaneta’s long-standing commitment to research and innovation, which has enabled the transformation of a raw material deeply rooted in its territory into high-performance panels now appreciated worldwide. The company’s strong international footprint, exporting around 90% of its production, was presented as an opportunity to further enhance the region’s expertise and strengthen Sabbioneta’s role within the newly established Wood District.

Nicoletta Azzi also emphasised the growing dialogue between industry, culture and creativity, recalling recent artistic collaborations in which Panguaneta poplar plywood has played a central role in installations and exhibitions of international relevance. These projects demonstrate how a living, identity-rich material can become an ambassador for its territory, driving sustainable innovation and opening new pathways for future development.
